HOW DO I OBTAIN A CAR-DEALERS LICENSE IN TEXAS?

How do I obtain a car-auction license in Texas?
I want to start my own business in South Texas buying repossessed and auctioned cars; I am aware that I need a dealer’s license to get the autos cheaper. Does anybody know where should I start? I looked up online but the sites are not helping me.

THANKS !!! ;)

Years ago, they required a small fee (I think less than $200.) Also you had to give a business address that was large enough to display ( I think 6 cars) and you had to have a sign for your company that could be seen above the parked cars and they had a requirement for the size of the letters. SUGGESTION!!!—
Before you do this, buy and sell a couple of vehicles on your own as an individual and then ask yourself if this is what you really want to do. Also, consider working for a dealership for a short time in car sales to get some experience. Good luck, be very careful.

    What he said.

Unless my friend who does own a dealership and has a license is lying to me, you need an actual place of business (land and building), an actual land line established at that business, have this verified by the DMV, and be ready to pay a ton of taxes (inventory tax, sales tax, property tax, tax on tools used to fix cars, etc) and wait a few months to get your license in the mail.

In other words, don’t think you can sneak this in buy doing this for the garage of your own home. Nor will you get rich doing this. He makes better money as a landlord.

biggest impediment is mandatory garage liability insurance which runs $2000-3000 per year.

And believe me, if you cant buy cars on your own outside of auctions for wholesale or below the dealer auctions may not help you much.

You are going to be a newbie, dealers & auctioneers can smell it and take advantage of your inexperience.

    True story…

I bought a truck out of the newspaper one friday afternoon. It was advertised for $1500. I paid $1300.

Sold it a few days later for $2900 (my biggest deal in 15 years in the car business) and I later saw the same truck, a year later with 20,000 more miles bring $3600 at a dealer only auction. (Plus the buyer paid auction buyers fees on top of that)

You dont need a dealers license for anything except guaranteed overhead. Until you start selling more than 3-4 per month.
